Unlocking Motorsport Photography with the OM System OM‑3

OM System OM‑3 in Motorsport Photography — My Trackside Experience and the Settings That Truly Work

p1311702 edit

At 1/25 sec, the photograph stops being just a panning exercise and becomes a study of the car’s personality. The PLATINUM‑liveried machine doesn’t glide; it attacks the frame. The slow shutter exaggerates the aggression in the blue wheels, the squat stance, and the way the chassis loads up mid‑corner. Instead of smoothing everything out, the motion blur amplifies the car’s intent — fast, raw, and committed. The OM‑3 keeps the names and sponsor panel crisp, letting the viewer feel the speed without losing the identity of the driver and team.

The first thing I noticed about the OM‑3 was how light and responsive it is. When I’m shooting for hours, moving between corners, climbing barriers, or crouching low for a better angle, weight matters more than people think.
This camera never slows me down — it actually helps me move faster.
Then there’s the weather sealing. Motorsport doesn’t wait for sunshine. I’ve shot in rain, dust, gravel spray, and even snow. The OM‑3 just keeps going. No fear of moisture, no fear of dirt. That confidence lets me get closer to the action.
But the real magic happens in the autofocus. The OM‑3 recognises vehicles instantly. Even when a drifting car disappears in a cloud of smoke, or a rally car bursts out of a corner throwing gravel everywhere, the camera locks on and stays locked.
It feels like it understands the sport as well as I do.

How I Set Up the OM‑3 at the Track

Motorsport photography has its own rhythm. The roar of engines, the smell of fuel, the sudden burst of speed as a car appears from behind a corner — everything happens fast, and I have only a split second to react.
In moments like these, the OM System OM‑3 becomes more than just a camera. It becomes a partner that keeps up with the chaos, the dust, the rain, and the adrenaline.
I’ve taken the OM‑3 to rallies, drifting events, and race circuits, and every time it proves why it’s such a strong tool for this sport. This is how it feels to shoot motorsport with this camera — and the settings that help me capture the moments that matter.

A Camera That Feels Built for Motorsport

I don’t think in terms of “lists of settings” when I’m shooting. I think in terms of situations.
Here’s how I work with the OM‑3 in real motorsport environments — and the settings that naturally fit those moments.

When the action is fast and unpredictable
On a rally stage, I never know exactly when the car will appear. It might be a second earlier or later than expected. That’s why I rely on:

  • C‑AF with tracking.
  • Vehicle Detection
  • A larger AF area
  • And often Pro Capture
Pro Capture is a lifesaver. I half‑press the shutter, wait for the moment, and the camera quietly buffers frames. When the car finally explodes into view, I press fully — and the OM‑3 gives me the entire sequence, including the frames from before I reacted.
It feels like having a second pair of eyes.

When I want to freeze pure speed

On a race circuit, where cars fly past at full speed, I don’t always freeze everything.
Instead of shooting at 1/1600s, I often work around 1/100s to keep a sense of motion in the wheels and background.
The OM‑3’s tracking AF holds onto the car even at these slower speeds, giving me sharp subjects with natural movement.

When I want to show motion, not just capture it

Motorsport isn’t only about freezing action. Sometimes the best photos are the ones that show movement — the blur of the background, the streaks of colour, the sense of speed. That’s where panning comes in.

For panning shots, I drop the shutter to 1/25s, 1/40s, or 1/50s depending on the car and the corner.
I plant my feet, rotate from the hips, and follow the car’s movement as smoothly as I can.

At 1/25 s the shutter is slow enough to stretch the background into long horizontal bands while still preserving the main structure of the car when the pan matches its speed. In wet conditions the effect intensifies — reflections soften and colours merge into fluid streaks that emphasise direction.

When stabilisation attempts to correct the panning movement, the background can break into uneven blur and the car may appear slightly soft. Disabling IBIS allows the motion to remain consistent: the background flows cleanly and the subject retains its definition.

At very slow shutter speeds such as 1/25 s, I often disable stabilisation on the OM-3. In a well-matched pan the camera is already travelling with the subject, so preventing the stabiliser from making micro-corrections keeps the background streaks smooth and the subject structure intact.

The Lenses That Complete My Setup

Every motorsport event is different, so I choose lenses based on the story I want to tell.
40‑150mm f/2.8 PRO
My main lens. Sharp, fast, and perfect for most trackside situations.
300mm f/4 PRO.
Ideal for rally stages or long-distance circuit shots.
Light enough to handhold all day.
12‑40mm f/2.8 PRO
For the paddock, service area, and behind-the-scenes moments.
This is where the storytelling happens — hands of mechanics, helmets, tools, emotions.

Moments That Show What the OM‑3 Can Do. Circuit racing. A car blasts past at full speed.
I often shoot around 1/100s to keep motion in the background while keeping the car sharp.

The OM‑3’s tracking AF stays locked even at these slower speeds, giving me dynamic, energetic images.
Drifting
Smoke everywhere.
Most guides recommend 1/320s, but I prefer going much slower — 1/25s to 1/50s — to exaggerate the movement and chaos.
Even when the car disappears in smoke, the autofocus stays glued to it.
The result: gritty, dramatic images that show the energy of drifting.
Rally
A jump. A burst of gravel. A moment that lasts less than a second.
Pro Capture catches the entire sequence, and I choose the perfect frame — wheels off the ground, dust exploding behind.

Final Thoughts

The OM System OM‑3 is more than just a fast camera.
It’s a tool that understands the rhythm of motorsport — the unpredictability, the speed, the atmosphere.
It’s light enough to move with me, tough enough to survive the elements, and smart enough to help me capture the moments that define the sport.
With the right approach, the OM‑3 becomes a partner that lets me focus on what truly matters:
the emotion, the energy, and the story behind every race.
